Finding a Niche: a Marketing Experiment

If you’ve clicked on this article, you almost certainly know what a niche marketplace is. But, do you realise how effortless it is to come across a potentially profitable niche market? If it takes you more than five minutes, you’re trying too hard.

Let’s do an experiment.

Pick up the magazine nearest to you. Flip to any random set of pages, pick out an ad. In my case, it’s a Jose Cuervo Tequila ad. In the ad, a man is laying on a beach, and all around him are laughing, bikini-clad girls. The niche that advertisement is aimed at is “men who like pretty girls” – too huge for a start up, but Jose Cuervo manages. It also suggests other niches: to an advertising agency, it suggests people who want magazine ads to a modeling agency it would suggest companies searching for girls in bikinis.

Three niches just from one cursory glance at 1 ad.

So, just put, finding a niche is straightforward.

But wait, let’s take it further. Those 3 niches seem pretty populated, so let’s look for something a small far more ripe for the picking. Look at who they’re not reaching. Men who do not like pretty girls? A niche, definitely, but how do you reach it? Businesses that do not require magazine ads? Maybe they will need TV ads, or radio spots. Still a fairly crowded niche. Businesses that don’t will need fairly girls for ads? Well, maybe they require men. In fact, I flipped by way of the whole magazine page by page and didn’t locate a single instance of male sexual exploitation.

I feel we have a winner.

We just found a largely unexplored and possible profitable niche in much less than five minutes. Still having trouble? Have a quick fifty for inspiration:

… are all examples of specialty products. Niche items. (If you counted all of those and realized it was only a list of forty-nine, congratulations. Maybe you ought to looking supplying services to individuals who require accurate accounting. That’s fifty. )
